Album by He Arrived By Helicopter

He Arrived By Helicopter is the moniker for Brooklyn-based songwriter C.Gibbs (Christian Gibbs), a former member of post-punk outfits Foetus and Modern English. Originally from San Diego, California, Gibbs pursued a solo career and signed to Atlantic Records for one album in 1999 before forming the chamber-rock group Lucinda Black Bear. Gibbs started He Arrived By Helicopter in 2016, following life changes that led to a move out of NYC. The objective for the project and its debut album, The Shiny Hostel, was to release and perform a new body of work in its embryonic form, shortening the length of time from conception to release. Mother of My Children

Album by Black Belt Eagle Scout

Black Belt Eagle Scout is Portland-based Katherine Paul, an indigenous queer musician whose debut album Mother of My Children is about “grief and love for people, but also about being a native person in what is the United States today.” Paul grew up in a small Indian reservation surrounded by native drumming, singing, and arts. In 2007 she moved to Portland, Oregon and began evolving her artistry into what would become Black Belt Eagle Scout. After releasing an EP in 2014, Paul recorded her first full-length album in Northwest Washington—the landscape’s eerie beauty and Paul’s connection to it clearly palpable. (Saddle Creek)

Praised by critics for his timeless pop-rock songwriting, Gold Star—a.k.a LA-based Marlon Rabenreither—incorporates roots and country-rock elements on his third album Uppers & Downers. Following his previous albums Dark Days (2015) and Big Blue (2017), Uppers & Downers features the single “Half the Time,” described by Noisey as “all sun-dusted Stones vibes, loaded with big piano chords, cracked vocals, and a kind of ecstatic ennui.” (Autumn Tone Records)

Be the Cowboy

Album by Mitski

Hailed as the new vanguard of indie rock following the breakout success of 2016’s Puberty 2, Mitski returns with Be The Cowboy. Her carefully crafted songs have often been portrayed as emotionally raw, overflowing confessionals from a fevered chosen girl, but in her fifth album, Mitski introduces a persona who has been teased before but never so fully present until now—a woman in control. BlacKkKlansman

Film by Spike Lee

From visionary filmmaker Spike Lee comes the incredible true story of an American hero. Ron Stallworth (John David Washington), an African-American police officer from Colorado, successfully manages to infiltrate the local Ku Klux Klan with the help of a white surrogate (Adam Driver), who eventually becomes head of the local branch. He even cultivates a relationship with the Klan’s Grand Wizard, David Duke (Topher Grace), who praises Ron’s commitment to the advancement of White America. BlacKkKlansman offers an unflinching, true-life examination of race relations in 1970s America that is just as bracingly relevant in today’s tumultuous world. (Focus Features)
