The new music project from Matty McLoughlin, co-founder and guitarist of The Soft Pack, U.S. Underground takes its indie pop inspiration from the loud and raw style of 1980’s Hollywood and Venice Beach. Based in Los Angeles, the duo aims to make music that would “sound cool at a house party or roller rink.” Their debut EP, Basic Instinct, is out now, and features musical collaborations with Brian Hill of Wavves and Rob Barbato of Darker My Love. The band is planning a spring 2018 tour. (Dream Recordings)

The Hungry Years

Book by Jack Pierson

New York-based artist and photographer Jack Pierson came to attention in the 90s as part of a group known as the Boston School—a circle of young photographers who met in 70s Boston before relocating to New York in the 80s and eventually becoming prominent artists. Pierson has since remained a prominent artist with his work in the collections of MoMa, the Whitney Museum of American Art and major museums worldwide. Jack Pierson: The Hungry Years compiles his early photographs taken throughout the 1980s before Pierson had emerged on the art scene. Featuring Boston School artists and friends and informed in part by the 80s AIDS epidemic, the photographs in The Hungry Years are largely autobiographical and showcase the combination of homoeroticism, seduction, glamour and traditional American motifs which have steadily underpinned Pierson’s art. Think of Scotland

Book by Martin Parr

Award-winning British documentary photographer, photojournalist and photobook creator Martin Parr has a knack for capturing local color while apprehending the universal thread of human eccentricity. A member of Magnum Photos since 1994, Parr has published around 40 solo books, in addition to many collaborative books, and has featured in exhibitions worldwide, including his touring exhibition, ParrWorld. His newest book, Martin Parr: Think of Scotland, accumulates 25 years of largely unpublished photographs into a comprehensive yet idiosyncratic perspective of modern-day Scotland. Think of Scotland offer an anthropological, satirical and intimate record of Scottish culture, incorporating classic iconography such as the Highland Games, landscapes and bagpipes alongside more absurd scenes. The book’s release is simultaneous with Parr’s current Think of Scotland exhibition at the newly reopened Aberdeen Art Gallery. (Damiani)

An American-British-Canadian drama directed by Benedict Andrews and based on the critically acclaimed play Blackbird by David Harrower, Una is a dark drama that delves into a confrontation between a woman and the man who sexually abused her when she was thirteen years old. Starring Rooney Mara, Ben Mendelsohn, Riz Ahmed, and talented newcomer Ruby Stokes, this tightly focused and unflinching film embraces the dark and twisting, dealing with the long-simmering consequences and raw wounds stemming from a sexual relationship between an adult and child.
