Following last year’s exciting release Plays the Music of Twin Peaks, which paid homage to the popular show’s soundtrack, Xiu Xiu’s upcoming album Forget stands to be their most accessible record yet. The band, made up of Shayna Dunkelman, Angela Seo and Jamie Stewart, has been grinding away between their last and current albums. They released a track in collaboration with Mitski for an upcoming John Cameron Mitchell film, recorded an album with Merzbow and scored an experimental take of the opera, The Magic Flute, all while writing their new album. Forget is produced by Grammy-winning producer John Congleton, musician and producer Greg Saunier of Deerhoof and Xiu Xiu’s own Angela Seo. The band holds true to their version of experimental art pop and dreamy sounds, while incorporating themes of decline, disappearance and rebirth. Singer Jamie Stewart describes Forget’s title and theme as embracing “the duality of human frailty. It is a rebirth in blanked out renewal, but it also drowns and mutilates our attempt to hold on to what is dear.” (Polyvinyl)

Book by See Red Women’s Workshop
In 1974’s London, a group of three ex-art students founded See Red Women’s Workshop, a feminist silkscreen poster collective challenging sexist images of women in culture with positive alternatives. See Red Women’s Workshop features the collective’s original screen prints and posters, created by females from all different backgrounds. Written by group members, the book also details the workshop’s history until its close in 1990 and includes a foreword by prominent British feminist Sheila Rowbotham. Wielding vivid graphics and a sense humor, the images in See Red Women’s Workshop express personal experiences, issues of sexuality, identity and oppression and the wider struggle for change during a crucial era of women’s liberation. Album by Tim Darcy
Front man of the band Ought, Tim Darcy, is releasing his debut rock album, Saturday Night. A combination of British punk reminisce with Americana, in Saturday Night the Arizona-born singer stays true to his commanding voice. His lyrics explore the idea of jumping head first into making art and the terrifying, beautiful nature of it. Darcy’s single “Tall Glass of Water” was included NPR’s list “Songs We Love” and packs the punch we’ve heard from Ought while positioning Darcy as an outspoken solo artist. (Jagjaguwar)

Album by Jesca Hoop
Fresh off her duets album Love Letter for Fire, recorded with Iron & Wine’s Sam Beam, Jesca Hoop has released Memories For Now. Grammy nominated musician and producer Blake Mills produced Hoop’s album, having played guitar for Hoop’s recordings in the past and performing live with her from time to time. Memories For Now reminisces tales from Hoop’s own life with an energetic, folk-centered delivery. Having been raised Mormon, Hoop explores the different sides of religion in “Songs of Old,” and she discusses abandonment in “The Lost Sky,” inspired by a close friend who woke from a coma to find himself divorced. As an artist with a truly remarkable past—she was Tom Waits nanny when she began her musical career—and whose accelerating career has spanned the last decade, it’s safe to say Jesca Hoop will be delivering her sweet, sagacious for a while. Film by Raoul Peck
I Am Not Your Negro brings to life James Baldwin’s unfinished manuscript Remember This House. A renowned, mid-century American author, poet, playwright and social critic, Baldwin published several classics in his lifetime such as Go tell It on the Mountain (1953), Giovanni’s Room (1956) and Another Country (1962). Armed with his unique insight as a gay, black man, Baldwin’s fiction addressed personal obstacles, psychological pressures and social norms surrounding black, gay and bisexual persons in America and their internal and external struggles for acceptance. Baldwin died, however, before completing Remember This House, an in-depth reflection on the history of race relations in America and civil rights leaders such as Medgar Evers, Malcom X and Martin Luther King Jr. His manuscript lives on in Haitian filmmaker Raoul Peck’s documentary I Am Not Your Negro, featuring Samuel L Jackson as narrator and video clips of Baldwin himself speaking. The film won the People’s Choice Award at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival and has been named the second highest-ranking movie of 2016 by Metacritic. (Magnolia Pictures)
