“MY WORK IS A STUDY ON THE INTERPLAY BETWEEN CREATOR TO CREATED,
SO EVERYTHING I DO IN AND OUT OF THE STUDIO INFORMS THAT.”

BUCKLEY

@buckleynow
Buckley is a stream-of-consciousness conceptual artist from Chula Vista, CA, whose work most frequently manifests in the form of ink drawings. She applies her “process-over-product” method to a variety of mediums, including music, textiles, performance, installation, sculpture and experience events. Her central focus is Ecstatic Creativity through the activation of the automatic and intuitive mind. Buckley’s drawings are visual meditations rendered with simple materials and precise line work that deliver symbolic messages which are both immediately clear and ever-developing with time spent observing. Buckley lives and works in Los Angeles, CA. See more of her work here

I met Buckley at her studio in downtown LA. Immediately as I stepped inside you could tell it was a creative space: the smells, the colors, the items on the walls, the light streaming in through the fourth floor windows. As we shot, I admired both the finished and in progress work that decorated the studio.

What do you like most about working as an artist?
Time to free think.

What inspires you?
Dance, the distant past, disruption, romance.

Do you recall your first favorite T-shirt?
It was a purple shirt with about 50 sentences that essentially described what it’s like to be a 12 year old girl, like, “I want my own phone in my room. I want to stay up late as I want.” A sort of list of demands! Very charming, in a preteen way. 😉

What’s next for you?
Lots of sculptures. And immersive/experiential work.

How would you describe your style?
Honest. And much older than I am.

What do you do when you are not working?
Trite as it may sound, I always feel like I’m working. I’m either physicalizing something, or being the physicalized something. Both states suggest a creative/working collaboration, full of observation, epiphany, and reaction/result; the only changing element is the media. My work is a study on the interplay between creator to created, so everything I do in and out of the studio informs that.
